Yuri and Bill Kochiyama moved to the New York City neighborhood of Harlem in 1960, a decade defined by activism and organizing. Her experiences in New York, including seeing many inequities firsthand, led her to begin her decades-long career in activism. Of the many well-known friendships she had, her bond with Malcolm X was transformative for her understanding and commitment to the liberation of all people.<\/p>\n
