In 1946, Yuri married Bill Kochiyama and together, they built a family and fostered community in Harlem, New York City. Yuri became involved in the neighborhood and advocated in various ways for a more equitable society. Her commitment to lifelong learning led to her friendship with Malcolm X and her philosophy that the liberation of one people was tied to the liberation of all peoples. Yuri\u2019s commitment to change has carried on in the lives and work of many, including her own family.<\/p>\n
