Yuri’s Family and Commitment to Change

In 1946, Yuri married Bill Kochiyama and together, they built a family and fostered community in Harlem, New York City. Yuri became involved in the neighborhood and advocated in various ways for a more equitable society. Her commitment to lifelong learning led to her friendship with Malcolm X and her philosophy that the liberation of one people was tied to the liberation of all peoples.
