The Multicultural Lounge

The Edward Said Minority Culture Lounge is dedicated to highlighting the life and enduring impact of Edward Said. A pivotal force in post-colonial studies, Said’s scholarly work surrounding Arab and Arab-American narratives inspired the creation of the Edward Said Minority Culture Lounge, a space that recognizes the creativity, contributions, challenges, and resilience of Arab and Arab American people.

There are 22 Arabic nations across the Middle East and North Africa, and Michigan is one of the US states with the highest population of Arab immigrants and Arab Americans. Although not an exhaustive collection of the many contributions from Arabic states, the items showcased in the multicultural lounge help tell the rich story of Arab peoples.

As we honor Edward Said’s legacy, we invite you to engage and learn about Said’s dedication to expanding the scope of conversation surrounding the experiences of Arab and Arab Americans.
