In place of slavery, many states adopted into law statutes which legalized racial segregation, officially ushering the United States into the era of Jim Crow. Some of the Black Codes restricted when, where, and how formerly enslaved African Americans could work and how much they could be compensated. Others created \u2018separate but equal\u2019 public services like schools, drinking fountains, public transportation, and bathrooms.<\/p>\n

The legal system, full of former Confederate soldiers working as police and judges, made it difficult for African Americans to win court cases, and they received harsher and longer sentences than their white counterparts. They set in motion systems of inequity whose impacts are still being felt.<\/p>\n
