Multicultural Lounges receive national recognition

By The Community Connections and Engagement Department

Michigan Housing and Student Life Facilities announced that Ambatana Afro American Multicultural Lounge (South Quad) and CAMEO Multicultural Lounge (Couzens) have earned national recognition for recent renovations.

Both staff and students appreciate these refreshed spaces, and now the Association of University Interior Designers (2025) has recognized them as well. At the organization’s awards ceremony in New Orleans, Ambatana – The Afro American Multicultural Lounge received first place, and the CAMEO Multicultural Lounge earned second place in the Student Life and Academic Affairs, Under 5,000 Square Feet category.

These awards mark a significant milestone, bringing the total number of national recognitions for multicultural lounges to 11 since the university renewed its renovation efforts in 2014.

The success of these projects reflects the collaboration between the Michigan Housing Community Connections and Engagement Department and the leadership of Jennifer Catalano, senior designer from Student Life Capital Projects. Catalano’s collaborative approach and dedication to engaging stakeholders have been central to the continued success of these spaces.

Congratulations to Jennifer, the Community Connections and Engagement team and all involved in this achievement!
